Rebates are available in Colorado right now and will be coming online in Washington in 2024
Washington
- Washington state has approved a budget package that will allocate up to $7 million in the next two years to support the purchase of e-bikes and create e-bike lending programs.
- The incentive program will allow e-bike buyers to get a $300 point-of-sale rebate regardless of their income. Individuals with lower incomes can receive rebates of up to $1,200. Households with incomes at or below 80 percent of their county’s median income would qualify for the higher rebate.
- Purchases must be made at brick-and-mortar bike shops rather than online, and bike-related equipment could qualify for the rebates.
- An additional $2 million would be used to create e-bike lending programs managed by municipalities, businesses, tribes, or nonprofits.
- The Washington State Department of Transportation’s Active Transportation Division will develop the two incentive programs, likely using Denver’s successful rebate program as a model. It’s unclear when the rebates will be available to consumers.
Colorado
- Colorado has various e-bike rebate programs at the state, city, and utility levels. The state program, funded by SB22-193, will offer rebates to low- and moderate-income Coloradoans starting in Spring 2023 through May of 2024 or when the funding runs out.
- The Denver program, launched in April 2021, offers $400-$1,700 rebates depending on income and e-bike type. The program has been very popular and has given out $3.3 million in vouchers as of September 2021.
- Other local programs include Highline Electric Association, which offers up to $150 rebates, and Longmont Power and Communications, which offers $500-$1,000 rebates. Boulder has decided not to run its own program for now.
